Transcript:Ballroom Dancing Basics: Waltz

I'm Brian T. Lawton.  This is my partner, Samantha L. Siegel.  We are professional dancers, instructors and choreographers here in New York City.  You can find us at samantha-and-brian.com.  We are here for About.com today to show you a little bit of the Waltz.

The Basic Hold & First Steps

To start, we're going to talk about the basic hold of our waltz. So we have the leader's right hand on the follow's left shoulder blade. We have the follow's left arm on the leader's right arm and we just relax the hand where it's comfortable. We then have the leader's left hand and the follow's right hand palm-to-palm. We close the follow's fingers in the squishy part of the leader's hands and we just close these fingers here but never grip.

We have one, two, three, one, two, three. We have forward with the left foot, side to the right, together with the left. Back with the right, side with the left, together with the right.

Sam will show the lady's part. We have back with the right, side with the left, together with the right, forward with the left, side with the right, together with the left.

The Underarm Turn

The next step we'll be doing is the underarm turn. We'll show it to you from the side- one two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three. So we do forward with the left, side with the right, together with the left. As we step back with the right, we raise this left arm to invite the lady to turn. We then finish our box. Side, together. We do forward with the left, side, together, we step with the right again. We invite the lady back to close position and finish side, together.

We have back with the right, side the left, together with the right. And as we step forward with the left, the leader raises up that right hand and we step forward with the right, left, right, left, right, left, and then side together.

Progressive Basic

For our final step, we're going to learn a progressive basic. It looks- one, two, three, one, two, three.

We're again starting forward with the left foot. So we have forward with the left, side with the right, together with the left. Front with the right, side with the left, together with the right.

Starting with the right, we have back with the right, side with the left, together with the right, back with the left, side with the right, together with the left.

The Final Combination

So, once you've practiced this, it should look a little something like this. One, two, three, basic box, two, three, one, two, three, underarm turn and one, two, three and progressive basic, one, two, three, one, two, three.
