Transcript:Types of Butter Substitutes
Hi, I’m Michelle Barton, for About.com, here at Clementine Bakery to give you tips on butter substitutes.
Ingredients to Substitute Butter
Five great butter substitutes, vegan margarine, shortening, olive oil, coconut oil, and safflower oil. Vegan margarine is a really great butter substitute because it mimics butter almost identically. It gives your baked goods a wonderful texture and flavor. Safflower oil is another great butter substitute, I would just watch out for the ratios so that your batter doesn’t come out too wet.
How to Use Butter Substitutions
Shortening is also a great butter substitute, it gives the same texture and feel as butter would in any sort of recipe you have. If you’re looking to save a few bucks you could also cut vegan margarine with shortening. Coconut oil is another great butter substitute, it gives you baked goods a wonderful coconut taste. The cons though however are that it is a bit costly.
Olive oil is a really great substitute when you’re baking savory. You can easily swap it out for butter, if something requires a butter glaze you could always do an olive glaze.
