Hi, I 'm Chef Michelle Karam with Dishes By Michelle, in Los Angeles, California, for About.com. I 'm here today to talk to you about dairy free butter substitutes.

About Dairy Free Butter Substitutes

Since butter is something that is generally used in just about all baking and cooking, there are people that do have some dietary restrictions, that are looking for dairy free butter substitutes. Well I 'm here today to talk to you a little bit about those and what your options are. One of the first things about a dairy free butter substitute, it means that it has no lactose, no milk, no sort of dairy at all into it.

Information About Dairy Free Butter Substitutes

A lot of butters will add whey, lactic acid, and if that 's something that you are unable to have, these are some solutions for you. The ones that I have right here are from Earth Balance. You can generally find these in any large grocery chain store or in a health food supermarket. The benefit to this is, of course, it 's non-dairy, but it also is non trans-fat, non-hydrogenated, and really truly represents that great taste of butter. It doesn 't taste artificial, because it has no artificial colorings or food flavorings that go inside of it.

This one right here, which is the buttery sticks, would probably be best to use for baking; as opposed to the organic buttery spread which is probably great on your toasts and things of that nature. Fleishmann 's is another brand that does make a dairy-free butter substitute, and if you were looking for something else, there 's even a soy butter substitute available to you as well. As opposed to a regular butter, which is made from dairy and the lactic acid and the lactic milk, this is made with vegetable oil, safflower oil, soy oil, palm oil. These are all very natural vegetable oils that are found, that are free of all dairy, and that 's what makes it so beneficial also for your heart health. These butter substitutes also are gluten free, which for somebody that has a gluten free diet restriction, these would be the perfect addition that you could use when baking, when cooking sauces, sautéing, any sort of cooking like that, these are perfectly good alternatives for that, when a recipe does call for some butter.
