Hi, I'm Aubrey Franchell for About.com. Today, I'm going to show you how to make pear butter, using a recipe from Easteuropeanfood.About.Com.
Ingredients for European-Style Pear Butter
Before you begin, you will need:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 pounds of pears (Any type will work, they should be washed, stemmed and cored)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions for Making European-Style Pear Butter
Start by adding the water and fruit to a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Then, go ahead and turn the heat down to a simmer. Allow the pears to cook until the flesh has broken down into a mushy texture. Remove the pulp from the heat. Pour through a sieve. Now you are going to sweeten the mixture. Add the pears to a bowl. Add the sugar to taste. Pour in the cinnamon. Add the nutmeg. Stir well.

Return the pear pulp to a saucepan. Stir often while cooking over medium-low heat. Allow the pulp to continue cooking for 1 - 2 hours until it thicken to a buttery texture. When the butter is ready, transfer it to a warm, sterilized jar. Be sure you leave 1/4" of room at the top of the jar. Seal with the lid. If you don't plan on refrigerating the butter, carefully place in a hot water bath for about 10 minutes to seal the jar. Allow the jar to fully cool and dry before detouring in a location that is dry, dark, and cool.
