Transcript:How to Crochet a Baby Hat

Hi, my name is Lauren Lamoreaux, owner of Comfy Cozy Designs and I'm here with About.com today to talk to you today on how to crochet a baby hat.

Materials to Crochet a Baby Hat

We're going to need 100 percent cotton, 4-ply, worsted weight yarn. We're going to need our scissors, project scissors only used for yarn. And then, we're going to need a size H crochet hook  and our handy yarn needle.

How to Start a Crocheted Baby Hat

Round 1Ok, so we're going to work on our first round. We're going to chain two and that's going to be our first half-double crochet. So, we have our 7 half-doubled crochets. And we're just going to join this together with the first chain-2 that we made. That counts as our first half-double crochet. We're going to join that with a slip-stitch. Just like that.

Round 2: Here we are with round 2. 2 chains there for our first half-double crochet. And we're going to do 2 half-double crochets total in each stitch from the previous round.

Round 3: So for round 3, chain 2 and then we are going to half-double crochet. We're going to continue like this to build the crown of our hat.

Round 4: Round 4, we're going to do 2 half-double crochets in that first stitch and then we're going to do 1 half-double crochet in the next 2 stitches.

Round 5: Round 5, 2 half-double crochets in the first stitch and a half-double crochet in the next 3 stitches all the way around.

Round 6: Round 6, you've got the 2 half-double crochets in the first stitch. And 4 stitches of a half-double crochet and repeat all the way around. And we're going to keep building like this, increasing by 1 stitch, all the way to round 8.

Round 8: Once you get to round 8 you're going to do 2 half-double crochets in the first stitch. And then we're going to go for 15 stitches of just a single half-double crochet in each stitch. Then we'll do 2 more half-double crochets.

Rounds 9-11: Now we're at round 9, 10 and 11. These are going to be 1 half-double crochet in each stitch all the way around and join.

Round 12: So, now we're at round 12 and this is going to be our decrease row. And we're going to do a half-double crochet in every stitch for 14 stitches here.

Round 13: We're at the second-to-last row here, round 13. Now this one we're going to make some pretty eyelits to go around. We're going to chain 3. That's going to count as our first double crochet and 1 chain. We're going to yarn-over, we're gonna do a double-crochet, but first we're gonna skip the next the stitch and we're gonna go right over to the third stitch.

Round 14: So, we're on the last round here on this baby hat. Round 14's gonna be a shelled edging.
