Transcript:How to Crochet: Basic Treble Stitch

Hi my name is Lucille and I'm here today with About.com to demonstrate the treble stitch, the tallest of all crochet stitches.

How to Start a Basic Treble Stitch

We start the treble with a slipknot, a circle that's crossed at the top and a line in the middle. Take your hook, go through the middle and pick up that line. Adjust your yarn on the hook. You're going to chain five. Yarn over, one, yarn over, two... You're going to yarn over one time, yarn over two times. You're going to go to the first stitch, you're going to count backwards now, one through four. You're going to insert your hook through your fabric, yarn over to the front, adjust it, you have four loops on the hook. You're going to yarn over, through two loops, yarn over, through two loops, yarn over again through two loops.

How to Continue a Basic Treble Stitch

So you've done that three times. You're going to make a next treble, yarn over once, yarn over twice, you're going to go through your chain. Pull back through your fabric to your front. Adjust it. You're going to yarn over, through two, yarn over through two, yarn over through two. And that's a treble. As you work your stitch across your chain which is here at the bottom.

So we have a stitch count of twenty one, we have to keep the twenty one continuity for height and rows, across the row you're going to go across twenty one, you're going to run your work, chain three and work back across your second row. Chain three, turn, work your third row. You're going to chain three, turn, and work your fourth row. You're going to again work to the same with your fifth row then you're going to do the same,  and you wind up here.

To start your next row of treble, you already have one loop on your hook. You're going to chain one yarn over, two, three, four. You're going to turn your work around and you're going to work down the other side. You're going to go to your second stitch, yarn over twice, go through your fabric, yarn over pull over to the front, adjust. You're going to yarn over and through two loops, yarn over, two loops, yarn over two loops. Again, yarn over two times, you're going to your next stitch. Hook through the fabric, yarn over, pull to the front, adjust. Yarn over two, yarn over two, yarn over two. And that gives you your treble. Now you can complete your row.
