Hi my name is Yvonne, and I'm here with About.com to demonstrate the crochet slip stitch. This is a swatch of the crochet slip stitch.
How to Crochet a Basic Slip Stitch
What you'll need for this is are a size i9 crochet hook and worsted weight yarn. And now to work the crochet slip stitch, you'll start with a slipknot. How I do mine is I hold my tail up in my right hand, cross and drape over ,y pointer finger, under with the hook, yarn over to pick up the tail that I'm holding with my thumb, slip it through, make a fist, and pull. And we're just going to work over a few chains. I'll need to do a row of singles, so you can see the difference in the height between the single and the slip stitch. And when working into my chain I prefer to work into the back bump as I turn the chain over to work into the back. It gives me a more finished edge. I'm just going to finish this row of singles, and then work a row of slip stitch.
How to Continue a Basic Slip Stitch
Chain one at the end of a row of singles and turn, that is a single and now the slip stitch, I'll insert the hook under the top two loops of my row. My hook comes out under my yarn, I catch it with the head of my hook, pull it up and through, and continue through the loop on the hook. So again, for a slip stitch, insert your hook, the hook comes under the yarn, catch the yarn, pull it up and through, and continue on to pull it through the loop on the hook. And I'll work a few more all the way across to the end. You can actually do this in one motion, but I prefer to stop so you can see. And again in one motion. The slip stitch is also good for joining in rounds as well. Short swatch of a row of singles with a row of slip stitch, and this is a larger swatch. And that's how you do the crochet slip stitch.
