Transcript:How to Crochet: Basic Single Crochet
Hi my name is Lucille and I'm here today with About.com to demonstrate the basic single crochet.
How to Crochet a Basic Chain Stitch
To start the single crochet we need to start with a slipknot. You're going to make a circle with a cross over the top and you're going to bring the yarn underneath the circle. You're going to take your hook, pick up the line in the middle of the circle and adjust it. Then you're going to bring your yarn up to your hook. Again you're going to hold your hook, adjust that yarn in your hand. You're going to chain yarn over through the loop, yarn over, through the loop, yarn over, through the loop…And were going t do this five more times.
How to Continue a Basic Chain Stitch
For a single crochet you always have one stitch, one chain open. You're going to the second chain, which is here. As you count your chains you're going one to nine, when you start your work the count reverses backwards the other way. You're going to your second chain. You're going to go though the chain, yarn over, pull to the front, you're going to yarn over again and pull through both loops. You're going to go through the next chain, yarn over to the front, yarn over through both loops. You're going to the next chain and you're doing this across the row, yarn over through two. Through the chain, yarn over, through two, through your chain, yarn over, back, yarn over again, through two. Through your chain, yarn over to the front, yarn over through two. And this is your single crochet row.
So here we have a piece of fabric already done, and we've gone several rows. Were going to start the next row. Chain one, through our fabric, yarn over, pull to the front, yarn over, through two. Through your fabric, yarn over, through two. Each time you go through your fabric, yarn over to the front, and yarn over through two, you're creating a stitch. One more, through to the front, yarn over, through two. And this is your basic single crochet.
