Hi, my name is Lucille. I'm here today with About.com to demonstrate the half-double crochet stitch.
Start a Half-Double Stitch With a Slip Knot
We start with a slip knot. You're going to make your circle with a cross at the top and you're going to lift it and bring your circle over so that you have a line down the middle. You're going to pick up the center line, you're going to hold your two ends and you're going to adjust it to the hook now, and that's a slip knot. Now you're ready to do your chain. Adjust your yarn in your hand, you're going to yarn over and through the loop. And each time you do that it counts as a stitch, so we've done it one, two, three times ... 13.
Count Properly for the Half-Double Stitch
Now we're ready to do our half-double crochet. You're going to yarn over, you're going to count back, reversing your count in the third stitch from the hook: one, two, three. You're going to place your hook through, yarn over, you're going to yarn over, place your hook through the third chain, pull to the front. Now you have one, two three loops on your hook. You're going to yarn over, you're going to pull your hook through all three loops. Again, yarn over, through your chain, yarn over again and to the front. You have your three loops. Yarn over again through all three. Yarn over, to your next chain and through. Yarn over and to the front. And you're going to do this across the row.
Second Row of a Half-Double Stitch
So eventually as you are working, you have your stitches the same as you have your chains. Now you're ready to do your second row. You're going to yarn over, and chain one, two, three. You're going to turn your work, you're going to your second space. Yarn over, through your fabric, yarn over and to the front. Again you have the same three. Yarn over, through three. Yarn over, through your fabric, to the front, yarn over again, three. Remember that when you do your half double crochet you also include that as the stitch, too. And this is your half-double crochet.
