Hi, this is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we'll answer the question: what are the main types of programming careers?
Careers for Programmers
There are generally two categories for programmers - application programmers or systems programmers. Applications programmers develop or modify programs for a specific purpose.
Systems programmers work in a much broader field, developing computer systems, networking systems, and operating systems. Within those two programming categories, there are many job opportunities.
Education Required for a Programming Career
Programmers generally concentrate their efforts on application development, software testing, or system programming. Educationally speaking, most companies prefer that computer programmers have a bachelor's degree - that's a four year degree. However, some companies will let you have that two-year computer programming certificate.
