Hi, this is Angela Dawn with About.com, and today I'm going to show you how to use a rice cooker.
All About Rice Cookers
A rice cooker is a very handy picece of equipment to have in your kitchen. Not only can you cook rice with it, but you can cook vegetables and meat and fish as well. Many of the new rice cookers have functions for cooking brown rice or white rice.
Some rice cookers also have a timer function, so you can set it to start cooking at a pre-determined time. If your rice cooker only has a high and a low setting, consult the directions to know how many minutes to cook whatever type of rice you are going to be cooking.
How to Use a Rice Cooker
To begin using your rice cooker, remove the steam basket if it has one. The insert of most rice cookers has a non stick inside coating, but, for good measure, you could also add some non stick spray.
A measuring cup may be included with your rice cooker. It will tell you how much rice to include, and then a corresponding line on the rice bowl will tell you how much water to put in. A general rule however, is to put in one part rice, and one and a half parts water.
First choose the rice you're going to use. Fill the cup with rice, pour it into the rice cooker and then put one and a half parts water. You can also use vegetable stock, beef stock or chicken stock. Be sure to wipe the lid of your rice cooker before you close it.
Close your rice cooker until you hear it snap. Then you'll want to plug in your rice cooker. Follow the directions that come with your rice cooker. Set the time based on the type of rice you are going to be cooking.
How to Use a Steamer Tray in a Rice Cooker
Another variation on using your rice cooker, if it comes with a steam basket you can add vegetables or meat and cook them at the same time.
Your rice cooker make have a steam vent on the top. Be sure not to touch it because it gets hot, and be sure you don't cover it as well when you're cooking.
If you do open your rice cooker, be sure to hold your head back as you open the lid because the vapor can hit you in the face and scald you. Once your rice is finished cooking, carefully remove the hot steamer tray. Then give your rice a stir. Your rice is now ready for a meal. Make sure your rice cooker is now set to warm. If you have leftovers, just put them in a storage container and put it in the fridge.
