Hi I’m Margarita Caraballo with Geek Squad for About.com and today we’re gonna be discussing, How to Install a A CD/DVD Drive.
Build a PC in a Static Free Area
So typically when you're going to do any installation the recommendation is to use something anti static. So for example i'm standing on an anti static mat but if you don't have one of those available to you an anti static wristband would be appropriate as well.
Connect the CD/DVD Drive
So here we have a DVD writer and on this particular casing it'll just slide in and right now I have it in the unlocked position this one doesn't have any screws it just has these two levers on the side to lock it in. So first I'll just wanna slide it in lifting this first lever and then lock it in on both sides and then the connections that go from the back of the optical drive, the first one you're gonna wanna use is the SATA connecter so that's the smaller one right here on the bottom and that'll go from the optical drive to your first SATA controller on the mother board. and then that'll give us connection to the mother board which will allow it to transfer data back and forth.
In order to power it you're gonna wanna connect to this longer one off of the power supply and that's what's gonna give us power to the actual optical drive.
Seek Help if Your New to PC Installations
The difficulty in installing your own internal drive I always say to take it with a grain of salt if you feel very comfortable opening up your own desktop and that's something you've done before then I would say go ahead and try it. There's not a huge downside to trying it yourself it just depends on confidence. You do run the risk of not rewiring it appropriately or accidentally wiring it some where you shouldn't and so of course we always recommend that if you're trying this for the first time either having someone there with you whose done it before and who can kinda hold your hand through the process.
