Hi, I'm Nick, and today for About.com, I'm going to help you decide whether to buy a laptop or a desktop PC.

Laptops Are Portable

Freedom or functionality? That's one of the key questions to consider when choosing a computer. Of course, laptops are more portable than their desktop rivals, allowing you to take them to work, use them on public transport, or even sit outside on a sunny day. But does that really make them better?

Desktops Are More Efficient

While laptops are great for speed and efficiency, desktop computers tend to offer higher specifications for your money. This means you get a larger screen, more memory and a faster computer. The sacrifice is, you're locked in place, making it much harder to access your files while on the go. Desktops are also susceptible to power cuts, while laptops have reserve battery power that could prove crucial in an emergency.

Desktops Are Easy to Upgrade

Thinking ahead, desktop computers tend to be easier to upgrade and repair, making them a slightly more long-term choice than a laptop. This is coupled with the fact that laptops are generally easier to damage and this could have serious repercussions on your life...and your wallet!

Desktops Are Great for Gaming

The one area where desktop computers have a significant advantage over laptops is when it comes to gaming. If you want to use your computer to play the latest and greatest videogames, it might be best to consider a desktop. That's not to say laptops can't handle games at all, but at the high end level, the desktop is king!

Desktops and Laptops Aren't Completely Different

Ultimately, the choice is down to you and your needs. You can set up a home office and keep all your files and tools in one place, or write a document on the train, or in the park, or on the beach. Rest assured that the gap has narrowed between the two, so whatever you decide, you can be happy with your decision.
