Transcript:Quick Tip: What Is an IP Address?

Hi, this is Andrew for About.com and this is what is an IP Address.

What is an IP Address?

Every computer on a network will have its own unique identifier. In a way, similar to an address on a home where every property has its own address, your PC will have one too.

How does an IP Address Work?

Networks will use the TCP/IP protocol as the usual method for communicating across the web. As the internet exploded around the world, it was feared that we would run out of IP addresses as there was only enough combinations to handle 4.4 billion unique computers. Now with the introduction of version 6, and its 128 binary bits, we can now have enough unique addresses for just over 46 billion machines.
