Transcript:How to Improve the Performance of a Computer Network

Hi, I'm Mark Sasson with MobileComputerServices.info, and I'm here today for About.com to talk to you about how to improve the performance of a computer network.

What Is a Computer Network?

Now a computer network is basically at least two computer devices or more that are communicating together, in this situation we call them a computer network.  And when you have a computer network, at one point you're going to strike a time where the network is not performing as well as you would like it to.

Improving the Performance of a Computer Network

Now sometimes the network is performing but your internet is not working; sometimes the internet is working but the network is not actually working. So it actually is pretty complex but we're going to narrow that down and just explain to you 5 of the easiest ways to improve the performance of a computer network.

About Computer Networks

Now computer networks, they talk to each other based on how fast the networking speed is. A typical speed is either 100 speed or gigabit, which is 1000 speed.  So sometimes in certain environments, the machines need to communicate faster and upgrading the network connectivity speeds can help us achieve just that. The second thing is, if you're using wireless instead of wired, we all know that the familiar wireless technologies are b, g and the latest, n.  These speeds vary from 54 to 300 megabits per second so it could be that you're using outdated wireless technology and that just simply needs to be upgraded to keep you up to speed.

Equipment and Computer Networks

Also with networks, one little faulty device, a bad piece of equipment like a switch or a router can basically ruin everything. When you have a device that is going bad, there is no end to how much of a problem or how big of a disaster that piece could make it. It's finding that piece that could really be like finding a needle in a haystack.  But networking is all connected, so you need everything to work properly in order to get the maximum performance.

Network Interface Cards

The fourth thing we are going to mention is faster network interface cards.  Desktop computers, not laptops or portable devices, they have built in network interface cards. Sometimes these can be upgraded to 10 times the speed to push the network data out of the computer faster. And the last thing we are going to mention is just the cables and switches.

With networking, you are only as fast as your slowest device. So if you have, let's say, 1000 speed cable and 1000 speed router, but the network interface card on your computer is 100 speed, you'll only be connecting at 100 speed.  So making sure that the cables and the switches and all of the devices are on the fastest technology will ensure that your network moves at the fastest speed it's capable of.
