Hey - I’m Mark Zamora for About.com and I’m going to show you 5 of the best Real-Time Strategy games being played right now!  

Starcraft 2

The first one is a long-awaited sequel to a classic: Starcraft 2! This game puts the battle in the far reaches of space as humans, Zergs and Protoss fight for dominance. The game includes a single-player story mode, which shows the battle from the perspective of each race - but the game really shines when you play against other opponents in a race for resources and victory.

Warzone 2100

A similar but free game is Warzone 2100. It also takes place in Space but focuses more on military style combat. It’s become really popular in the free game communities and many players still play it to this day.

Age of Empires Online

The next game is Age of Empires Online - the most recent game in the Age of Empires series. What’s unique about this game is that you start from humble Hunter and Gatherer beginnings and grow your way into a full empire as you fight enemies and other players.  This new entry into the series combines RPG elements into the mix and is free to play, with more content available for purchase.

Company of Heroes

If Space or ancient history isn’t your preferred battle field, Company of Heroes is for you - taking on World War II. Just like the other games we’ve covered, it starts you off with nothing as you recruit armies to fight the enemies. The goal is to capture points on a map and push your opponents out of the game.

League of Legends

For a more mystical, fantasy adventure - one game comes to mind: League of Legends. This is a new type of RTS called a MOBA, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena which focuses less on resources and more on battling! It has been extremely popular since it is free to play and a lot of fun.  You control armies and gather resources - just like other games - but you mainly control a legend, a deity like creature which commands your army.
