Transcript:What to Do Before Moving In

Hello, my name is Kathryn Ferrara, and today we're going to talk about what to do before moving into a dorm.

Plan Ahead of Your Move

You've finished your applications, but packing and getting ready for college can seem like the most daunting part of the process. Take the stress out of it by planning ahead and don't wait until the last day before you leave.

Make A Packing List

Try making a list of things you'll need. There will be the obvious ones like clothes, shoes and toiletries. But remember you're living in a dorm and sharing a room and bathroom. So here's a list of items to remember. Quarters, air freshener, all these items are must-haves. Obviously, you'll need more items than this, but this is just a good list to get started from.

Buy Items When You Arrive at College

But remember, you will have to buy some things when you get there. So yes, detergent and hangers are essential, but you can buy them when you arrive. Save the space in your suitcases or boxes, especially if you're not driving. And if you're on a tight budget, save the inexpensive items to buy when you get there.

Organize With Your Roommate

And you don't have to buy everything if you have a roommate. Start the conversation going with them with a friendly email, text or even Facebook message. Introduce yourself. Keep it casual but sincere.

When it comes to packing, it's important that both of you decide exactly what you're bringing. You'll have a limited space in your dorm room, and you don't want to waste it with duplicates. And if you do get to school and realize you have forgotten something, you can always buy it or grab it next time you're home.
