Hi I'm Omar Saad here for About.com and this is a profile of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers Football program.

History of the Nebraska Cornhuskers

With a storied legacy that includes legendary coaches and players, along with both conference and national titles, the University of Nebraska has consistently been one of college football's premiere programs. Lets take a closer look.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers kicked off for the first time on Thanksgiving Day in 1890 and in the subsequent 100 plus years have put together a consistent sting of success matched only by a select few. With 43 conference titles, 5 national championships, and 3 Heisman Trophy winners, they live in a rarefied air.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Bob Devaney Era

The Cornhuskers first taste of elite success came in the early 1960's under then coach Bob Devaney. Coaching from 1962 to 1972, Devaney amassed a record of 101 wins, 20 losses, and only 2 ties. In fact in his first year as coach, the program began what would become an NCAA record of 40 consecutive winning seasons. Devaney led Nebraska to two National Titles, both coming after undefeated seasons in 1970 and 1971.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Tom Osborne Era

While it might have seemed like a no win situation filling Devaney's shoes, when offensive coordinator Tom Osborne became head coach, it kicked off an unprecedented run of success for Nebraska football, never winning less than 9 games in a season.  Osborne proceeded to lead the Cornhuskers to 3 National Titles during his tenure, all of which during the 1990's. Under Osborne the Cornhuskers had 255 win, only 49 loss, and 3. Osborne retired in 1997 after his 3rd national title, going went 60-3 over his final 5 seasons as coach.

Like any historic football power, the Cornhuskers have had a number of great players suit up in their scarlet jerseys. Among them were Heisman trophy winners Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch. Along with many who went on to the NFL such as Irving Fryar, Grant Wistrom, and Ndamukong Suh. Regardless of the players or the coach, few programs have ever maintained the level of consistent, long-standing success that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have.
