Hi, I'm Elisa Pupko for About.com. And here's how to make an Espresso with an Espresso machine.
Pros of Making Espresso Using an Espresso Machine
Espresso is great because it gives you a bold, rich flavor of coffee. However, making a good espresso is an art form, and it can take a while and some patience to perfect. Also, you get less coffee for the amount of grounds you use and so it can be a more expensive method of making coffee.
You will need an Espresso machine, fine ground coffee, a coffee scoop, a shot glass or something for your Espresso to go into and water for your Espresso machine.
How to Make Espresso Using an Espresso Machine
First you want to fill the Espresso machine with water. Place your coffee grounds into the port-a-filter. Level it off. To tamp, first place this on an even, level surface. Now when you push down, you want to push down with 20-30 pounds of pressure. To finish, give it a nice twist so that no coffee grounds are stuck to the tamp.
Next, attach this to your Espresso machine; lock it into place. Take your glass and put it under the Espresso machine. Then press Start on your Espresso machine and it will begin to extract. Good Espresso extracts quickly and it should take no longer than 20-30 seconds. Any longer and you're over extracting your coffee and will end up with a bitter or burnt coffee taste. Once your espresso's ready, it's best to drink it right away while it's still hot.
