Modern Martini Recipe

with Brian Nishii

Brian from Forbidden City demonstrates how just a subtle touch of sweet and dry vermouth can distinguish a good martini from the perfect modern martini.

Transcript: Modern Martini Recipe

Hi, I'm Brian Nishii from Forbidden City in New York City for About.com Food, and today I'm going to show you how to make the perfect martini, or my perfect martini.

Martini Ingredients

So to make a perfect martini, you'll need the following ingredients:
  • 4 ounces of vodka
  • 1/2 ounce of sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 ounce of dry vermouth

The Modern Martini

No one ever really drinks a perfect martini these days -- that's classically 1/2 ounce each of sweet and dry vermouth. But instead I'd like to make my perfect martini, which is almost similar but involves more vodka.

Start with a chilled martini glass full of ice. We're going to have a shaker full of ice, and we're going to pour a full on 4 ounces of premium vodka, or quality vodka of your choice.

Dress the Martini Glass

Now what we're going to do is dress the glass with the vermouth because honestly, maybe it's just my generation, but I don't like the vermouth stuff. Just a dash of sweet, a dash of dry vermouth in there. Once we run through that, we're just going to line this chilled glass with the aromatics of the vermouth. Twirl it around until it's evenly coated and dump. Yes, it's a waste of liquor, but it's all in the florals, the flowers.

Pour in the Vodka

Pour in the vodka, a nice chilled glass. Garnish with olives. And that is the very modern, very hip, and my favorite perfect martini. Thanks for watching, and to learn more you can visit us at food.about.com.
