Transcript:How to Make an Old-Fashioned Cocktail
Hello, I'm Thomas Kunick, we're here at the Downtown Cocktail Room in Las Vegas, Nevada for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how we make an Old Fashioned Cocktail.
Ingredients for an Old Fashioned Cocktail
We're going to use two ounces of bourbon, one half ounce of sugar syrup or simple syrup. I like to use a dark, a raw sugar syrup. Two to three dashes of angostura bitters, a cherry, and some oranges.
If these are the cocktail cherries you have to use, I'd say don't use them. These are not going to add good flavor to your cocktail, they're more for presentation purposes. You can garnish your cocktail with it if that's what you have. The kinda cherries we're going to be using are a Maraschino infused cherry.
Combine Ingredients for Old Fashioned
My first step, I'm going to put some ice in my glass here, and just let that cool down for a minute. I'm going to take my cherry which is soaking in a little bit of Maraschino juice, and a few dashes of bitters here. Take your first orange, and I'm just going to cut off a little half wheel, and then I'm going to add one half of an ounce of raw sugar syrup, and this I'm going to muddle it up, and then I'm going to add two ounces of bourbon. Now that you have your ingredients in your mixing glass, we'll add a few cubes of ice. Just give it a nice stir. 15-20 times will do, just give it a nice, nice and blended. Take your julep strainer, now that your glass has been sitting there chilling down, there's probably some added water, pour that out.
Garnish and Serve the Old Fashioned Cocktail
Pour that in, and what I like to then do is garnish it with another one of these cocktail cherries, and with a second orange and a peeler, and right over the top of the glass I'm going to put a nice orange swath and express all of the oils out of the top of your glass--out of the top of your cocktail here. Okay, set that in, and there you have and Old Fashioned Cocktail.
