Transcript:Iced Vodka Bottle

Hi. I’m Chef Roblé for About.com. Today we are going to learn how to make an iced vodka bottle. Here we go.

Ingredients for an Iced Vodka Bottle

Here are our ingredients.

• 1 bottle of vodka 750 mL
• 1 empty vodka bottle
• 3 apples
• 1 large box of kosher salt
• 3/4 lb. of ginger

Slice the Ginger and Apples

The first thing we want to do is to take this ginger and slice it on a Japanese mandolin. Slice it a little bit thicker than a quarter. Now we’ll do the same thing with the apples. Just slide it right across.

Fill Vodka Bottle with Salt and Water

Now we’re going to take the salt and fill up the vodka bottle with the salt. What I’m going to do now is to add water to the salt in this bottle. It’s going to make salt water and went back is going to do is drastically drop the freezing point of the water inside of this bottle. That will make a lot of sense later on when I’m pulling this out of the ice.

Close this up, and shake it around. I’m going to add a little more water. Shake it up a little bit more. And now we have some very salty water.

Place Vodka Bottle in Stock Pot with Apples and Ginger

Now we have the vodka bottle right in the middle of a stock pot. And we’re going to add water until it gets about 4/5 of the length of the vodka bottle. Now we’re going to take the apple and ginger slices and place them all around. This is basically just decoration. You can use apples and ginger like me. You can use other fruits. You can use herbs, flowers, anything. This is going to look good though.

Freeze the Vodka Bottle

Now were going to take this whole bottle, put in the freezer and let it freeze overnight. So it’s the next day and our vodka bottle is frozen. The liquid on the inside is not frozen. This is because we added the salt in there and rose up to temperature.

Replace Salt Water with Hot Water

So what we want to do now is pour out the liquid that is in here. We’ll do this very quickly. Be careful, it’s pretty heavy. Next we want to pour hot water back into the bottle. This will help to dislodge the bottle from the ice. So we are going to let the hot water sit in that bottle for about 5 to 10 minutes and that will help to melt the ice surrounding the bottle so we can pull it out of the ice. After that we can put a bottle of vodka in there that actually has vodka in it. So five minutes later give it a little time and it comes right out.

Pull the Ice Out of the Pot

Next thing we are going to do is to pull the ice right out of the pot. It comes out pretty easily. Slight right onto his plate. There’s our ice with apples and ginger. Final step, we have this bottle of vodka. We are going to pop it right into the ice and you are ready for some summertime fun.
