Transcript:How to Make a MargaritaHi, I'm Chef John Mitzewich for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how to make the mystical, the magical, the Margarita - one of the world's great cocktails.
Mix a Margarita Simple SyrupWe're going to start with a simple syrup, which is simply 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of water. Bring it to a boil and as soon as the sugar dissolves, turn it off and let it cool. That is a simple syrup.
Margarita IngredientsOr our lime juice we're going to squeeze fresh limes - no artificial mixer! Nothing makes a better lime juice than fresh limes. We're going to need 3/4 cup.
For the rest of the mix, which is going to make about 4 drinks, we're going to need:
- 1 cup tequila - I used gold, but you can use white
- 3/4 cup of lime juice
- 3/4 cup of triple sec, which is an orange liqueur
- 1/4 cup of the simple syrup
Margarita ProportionsSo the proportions for my recipe are:
- 4 parts tequila
- 3 parts lime juice
- 3 parts triple sec
- 1 part simple syrup
Serving a MargaritaOn to the service. We're going to prep out glasses with the traditional salted rim. Simply rub a piece of lime around the rim and dip into regular flake kosher salt. Don't waste your money on margarita salt. You just want to tap it in there lightly. Be careful not to put too much. We're trying to lower our inhibitions, not raise our blood pressure.
Once the glass is ready, fill it with ice. Use the smaller flat ice from the supermarket which works better than the large ice cubes from your freezer. The smaller cubes will pack the glass tighter with ice.
Pour over the cold margarita mix. Garnish with a little fresh lime, and that is one beautiful Margarita. Now, do you see any straw in there? No, because you don't drink a margarita with a straw. You simply sip it through the salt rim.
That's the ultimate way to enjoy a margarita. By the way, this should go nowhere near a blender. That's my simple Margarita recipe - you can play with those proportions if you want it a little sweeter, more tequila, etc. Try it a few different ways, and find your own personalized recipe.
Anyway, I hope you give it a try - it's one of the world's great cocktails. Enjoy!
