Transcript:5 Variations on a Manhattan

Hi, I'm Josh Finocchiaro from Annie's Cafe & Bar in Denver, Colorado. I'm here for About.com to show you how to make 5 variations on the Manhattan.

Classic Manhattan

To get started, I'm going to show you how to make a classic Manhattan. Before you begin, you'll need:

  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 - 3 dashes of bitters (a dash of bitters)
  • a maraschino cherry for garnish.

To begin, add 2 oz of whiskey to an ice-filled mixing glass. Pour in 1/2 ounce of sweet vermouth. Add 2 - 3 dashes of bitters. Shake well.

Manhattans are typically served in a chilled cocktail glass. As a variation, you can strain the mixture into an old fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with the cherry and serve.

Dry Manhattan

To get started, you'll need:

  • 2 oz rye or bourbon whiskey
  • 1 oz dry vermouth, (a dash)
  • 2 dashes of bitters
  • a lemon peel for garnish.

Again, Manhattans are typically served served in a chilled cocktail glass, I'm going to show you a twist on the traditional recipe and build it in an old fashioned glass.

Pour 2 ounces of whiskey into an ice-filled old fashioned glass glass. Add an ounce of vermouth. Now add a dash (or 2 dashes) of bitters. Give it a stir. Twist a lemon peel directly over the glass to add a little extra flavor. Now, we'll use it as a garnish and serve.

Perfect Manhattan

You will need:

  • 2 oz blended whiskey
  • 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 oz dry vermouth

You can add the ingredients into a shaker and strain into a chilled cocktail glass, again, I'm going to use an old fashioned glass.

Pour 2 oz of blended whiskey into an ice-packed old fashioned glass. Now add 1/2 oz sweet vermouth. Pour in 1/2 oz of dry vermouth. Swirl the glass. Add a straw and you are ready to serve.

Brandy Manhattan

You will need:

  • 2 oz of Brandy
  • 1/2 oz of sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes of bitters
  • a splash of water
  • 1 tsp of maraschino cherry juice
  • 1 Maraschino Cherry

Add the ingredients to a mixed and strain into a cocktail glass. We are going to use a old fashioned glass.

Pour 2 oz of Brandy into a old fashioned glass filled with ice. Now add 1/2 oz of sweet vermouth. Add 2 dashes of bitters. Pour in a splash of water. Finally pour in 1 tsp of maraschino cherry juice. (Swirl) Give it a stir. Garnish with a cherry and serve.

Scotch Manhattan (Rob Roy)

You will need:

  • 2 oz Scotch
  • 1/4 oz sweet vermouth
  • bitters to taste
  • maraschino cherry for garnish

To begin, add 2 oz of scotch to an ice-filled mixing glass. Pour in 1/2 oz of sweet vermouth. Add 2 - 3 dashes of bitters. Shake this well.

You can serve in a chilled cocktail glass. Again, as a variation, you can strain the mixture into a old fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with the cherry and serve.
