Transcript:How to Make Sweet and Sour PorkHi I'm Gina Miller with About.com Food making an Asian favorite, Sweet and Sour Pork. This is a popular dish in most Asian restaurants, but it is also fun and delicious to make at home.
Ingredients for the Sweet and Sour PorkHere are all the ingredients you will need for the pork and pork marinade:
- 1 pound of boneless pork roast, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of white sugar
- 1 teaspoon of soy sauce
- 1 egg white, beaten
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1/2 cup of cornstarch
- 4 cups of vegetable oil for frying the pork
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 3 stalks celery, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
- 1 medium green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 medium onion, cut into wedges
- 1/4 teaspoon of white sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
Ingredients for the Sweet and Sour SauceHere are the ingredients for the Sweet and Sour Sauce:
- 1 cup of water
- 1/4 of teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup of white sugar
- 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup of ketchup
- 1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce
- 1 8-ounce can of pineapple chunks, un-drained
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1/4 cup of water
Marinate the Meat for Sweet and Sour PorkPlace the cubed pork in a medium sized bowl and season with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of soy sauce. Mix in the egg white and green onions. Cover and place in the refrigerator at least 1 hour.
After an hour, remove the marinated pork and coat with 1/2 cup cornstarch and set aside. Now in a heavy pan or deep fryer, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil to 365 degrees F. Fry the coated pork in the heated oil for about 10 minutes or until brown, then remove and pat dry on paper towels, then set aside.
Make the Vegetables for the Sweet and Sour PorkNow in a wok heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium heat. Now stir in the celery, green bell pepper and onion, then cook until tender. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Now remove from the heat and set aside.
In another large saucepan, mix the 1 cup water, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of ketchup and 1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce. Whisk and bring to a boil.
Now stir in the cooked pork, celery, green pepper and onion mixture, then add the pineapple chunks and finally the juice. Continue to boil, and stir together to make the sauce thicker.
Thicken the Sauce to Make Sweet and Sour PorkIf the mixture needs to be thickened, in a cup mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarchand 1/4 cup waterand add to the dish to thicken. Cook until well blended. Serve warm with white or brown cooked rice.
