Transcript:How to Make Sesame Chicken

Hi, I'm Jen D'Amore for, and this video is all about how to make sesame chicken, using a recipe from's Chinese Food site.

Ingredients for the Sesame Chicken

You'll need:
  • 3 boneless chicken breasts
For the marinade, you'll need:
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cooking wine or dry sherry
  • a few drops of sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Mix all of those together and set it aside. For the sauce you'll need:
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/8 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tsp chili paste, or to your taste
  • 1 clove garlic
You'll also need:
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 3-1/2 to 4 cups oil for deep-frying, peanut oil is suggested

Safety Tips for Making Sesame Chicken

Remember to use safe practices for handling raw meat. use a non-pouring cutting or prepping surface. Wash your hands immediately after coming into contact with the raw meat, before handling anything else, and sanitize every surface and tool that may have come into contact with the raw meat.

Cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes. Add the marinade ingredients and marinate the chicken for 20 minutes. Mix together all of the sauce ingredients and bring them to a boil, stirring continuously. Then turn the heat down to low and keep warm while you are deep-frying the chicken.

Fry the Sesame Chicken

When the oil's hot and the chicken's marinated, add a few pieces at a time, deep-frying until golden brown. Then, drain them on paper towels and repeat with the remainder of the chicken.

Just before you are finished deep-frying, bring the sauce back up to a boil, and when the chicken is ready to serve pour the sauce over top. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve over rice.
