Transcript:How to Make Pepper SteakHi, I'm Gina Miller with About.com Food and today I'm making Asian Pepper Steak. I love eating Asian food, ordering in on movie night or visiting my local favorite restaurant. But I also love making my own Asian dishes right in my own kitchen for family and friends.
Ingredients for the Pepper SteakHere are the ingredients you will need:
- 1/2 cup of beef broth
- 3 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 2 tablespoons of peanut or vegetable oil
- 1-1/2 pounds of beef (round or skirt steak, tenderized and cut into 1/4-inch strips)
- 1 medium-sized red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips
- 1/4 pound of fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 3 green onions, sliced
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Red Chili paste is optional
Brown the Meat for the Pepper SteakIn a small bowl, combine the beef broth, soy sauce, cornstarch and the ground ginger. Mix well and set aside. In a large skillet or wok, heat oil over medium-high heat and sauté the beef 2 to 3 minutes, or until browned.
Tips for Using a Wok to Make Pepper SteakHere's a tip. Although traditional woks have round bottoms, today's modern woks have flat bottoms to accommodate flat electric burners. So when purchasing, make sure you check the bottom -- otherwise you'll have to buy a special stand.
Add the bell pepper,mushrooms,scallions,and garlic,and cook 4 to 5 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Add the broth mixture to the skillet and cook 2 to 3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
Tips for Serving the Pepper SteakServe the Asian Pepper Steak with brown or white steamed rice. Add red chili paste for an optional spicy taste. This is such a quick and delicious dish to make and a nice change from the normal meat and potatoes recipes.
