Transcript:How to Make Fortune CookiesHi, Cliff Wildman with About.com Food here. Normally, you get your fortune cookies with your Chinese carry out, but today I'm going to show you how to make them in your own kitchen, since you get to personalize the fortunes these can be a lot of fun to make and a big hit at parties.
Fortune Cookie IngredientsFor this recipe we'll need a half a cup of sugar, a half cup of flour, sifted, half a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a teaspoon of almond extract, two eggs two tablespoons of water.
Write Your FortunesBefore you begin you'll need to create your fortunes. I suggest making them at least three and a half to four inches long so they'll stick out of the cookie when you're done. You'll need a silicon mat or some parchment paper and a mug to shape the cookies. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Prepare the Fortune Cookie BatterSeparate the egg whites from the two eggs and put them in a bowl. Use an electric mixer to mix the eggs until they are frothy and form soft peaks. This is what it will look like. Put those eggs in a larger bowl and add the flour, the sugar, the almond extract, the vanilla extract and mix well. Once that is mixed together add the water to thin out the batter.
Bake the CookiesTake the silicon mat and pour a tablespoon of batter. Only make a couple of cookies at a time until you get used to how long they need to cook. Place the silicon mat on a baking sheet and place in the oven for four to six minutes. At about four minutes check to see if the edges of the cookie are turning golden brown. As you see here, they're ready.
Shape the CookiesUsing a butter knife or a thin spatula slowly work the cookie off the mat. Flip and add a fortune down the middle. Now fold like a taco and placing the middle of the cookie on the mug form into a fortune cookie. Here you can see it again from another angle.
And that's the recipe. That's how you make fortune cookies for party favors. If you want these to be crispier you can put them back in the oven for a few minutes or you can serve them like this.
