Transcript:How to Make Beef Lo MeinHi, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, we're making beef lo mein from our Chinese Food site.
Ingredients for Beef Lo MeinFor this recipe, you will need:
- 3/4 lb. flank steak
- 1 Tbsp. soy sauce
- 1-1/2 tsp. cornstarch
Ingredients for Beef Lo MeinStart by cutting the flank steak into bite-sized strips. Look at the flank steak and see where the lines are running? That's the grain. You want to cut against the grain. That's what makes the meat more tender.You can cut the strips in half if they're too long.
Additional Instructions for Making Beef Lo MeinNow place the soy sauce and cornstarch in a bowl, and whisk them together. Add the flank steak strips and stir with your hands to coat the flank steak. The flank steak marinate for 20 minutes in the refrigerator.
Ingredients for the Lo MeinFor the lo mien, you will need:
- 8 oz. fresh egg noodles or spaghetti
- 1 tsp. sesame oil
Instructions for Making the Lo MeinFill a large pot with water. Bring to a boil, and add the noodles. Cook as directed on the package. Drain the noodles, and toss with the sesame oil. Set aside.
Ingredients for the Sauce for Beef Lo MeinFor the sauce, you will need:
- 2 Tbsp. oyster sauce
- 2 tsp. dark soy sauce
- 4 Tbsp. beef broth
- 1 tsp. granulated sugar
Heat a wok over medium high heat, and add 2 Tbsp. of the oil. Add the flank steak and stir fry until browned and almost cooked through. Remove to a plate. Now heat the remaining 2 Tbsp. of the oil in the wok, and add the garlic. Stir fry just until fragrant, and add the carrots. Stir fry for about 1 minute, then add the cabbage. Cook for 1 more minute. Now add the noodles, and stir them in. Add the sauce, and stir to coat the noodles. Then add the beef. Mix everything well. Serve the beef lo mein immediately.
