Transcript:5 Ways to Use Sweet and Sour Sauce

Hi, I'm Cheryal Loosmore with About.com. Today I will be showing you five uses for sweet and sour sauce.

What Is Sweet and Sour Sauce?

You can purchase bottled sweet & sour sauce at most grocery stores. You can also make this simple sauce yourself. Typically you make sweet and sour sauce by combining sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, ketchup, water in a medium sauce pan bringing it to a boil, stirring continuously until the mixture has thickened.

Various Ways to Use Sweet and Sour Sauce

It can be used in a variety of dishes. Sweet and sour sauce is an excellent dip for Chinese spring rolls. Use the sauce to coat fried meat or tofu. Cut up beef, chicken or tofu into bit size pieces. Coat the pieces in a batter of flour, oil, corn starch, salt and pepper and fry until golden brown. Drain off the excess oil, warm the sweet and sour sauce in a sauce pan. Pour the warm sauce on the fried pieces of meat or tofu and serve with rice. For a healthier dish, sauté fresh vegetables in a wok or sauté pan. Add the sweet and sour sauce when the vegetables are close to your desired doneness.

Additional Ways to Use Sweet and Sour Sauce

Try using sweet and sour sauce as a marinade for chicken wings. Cut off wing tips and split wings then cover in sweet and sour sauce. Cover with plastic wrap or a glass lid and store in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours or overnight. Create a tasty appetizer by making sweet and sour meatballs. Mix ground beef, pork or chicken with minced garlic and onions. Form into meatballs and brown in a sauté pan with 2 T vegetable oil. Add the browned meatballs to a saucepan with sweet and sour sauce, onion cut into bite sized piece and pineapple chunks. Simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes until done.
