Transcript:Make Your Home a Reading-Friendly Environment
Hi, I'm Kathy Moore for About.com. Reading opens up a whole world of knowledge for your children. This program offers ideas on how to create a reading friendly environment in your home.Benefits of Reading to Kids
Ever since they were infants, I have enjoyed reading books aloud to my children. Hearing the spoken word helps babies develop the vocabulary they will need to communicate with others. As they grow, children who hear books read aloud develop language and literacy skills faster.Keep Books in the House
Creating a reading friendly environment in your home does not require any special knowledge or equipment. Here are a few easy things you can do. First of all you need some books. The public library is a great place to discover new books and making use of the library is more economical than purchasing books.Find Topics Your Kids Enjoy Reading
Choose a variety of books that are age appropriate for your child. It helps if you select subject matter that the child is already interested in. My son loves books about trucks for example, while my daughter enjoys stories about dogs.Place Books in Different Rooms
I try to keep books all over the house wherever the kids spend time. This includes the playroom, the bedroom and even the bathroom. Whenever we go for a long ride in the car, I encourage the kids to pack a book bag for the trip. Try setting up a special reading area complete with a bookshelf that the kids can reach, a comfy chair, and good reading light.Schedule Regular Reading Time
Set aside a time for family reading each day and encourage kids to read for a set amount of time before turning on the TV, computer or video game console.Though it can be hard to find time to curl up with a good book, moms and dads can provide a powerful example to children by reading for pleasure. So, In addition to providing books and a cozy place to read them, show your kids how much you enjoy reading too.
