Hi, I'm Katherine Lee for About.com, and this is Laura Sullivan from Frame Events and Florals, and today she's going to show us how to make a beautiful centerpiece for Hanukkah.

Use Carnations in a Hanukkah Floral Centerpiece

Tell me about what goes into your centerpiece.  I see that you have some ingredients here. I do. The easiest way to do this is to stick with one color, and for Hanukkah, white is one of the key colors.  I'm using three flowers: the white hydrangea, the white spider mum, and right here, the white carnation. Now the beauty of the white carnation -- and this is what I want everyone to know: don't ever underestimate the power of a carnation -- when you put three of four carnations together like that, isn't that beautiful?  It looks like a hydrangea but it's not.  The white carnation will go in, and I'll put the spider mum in, and the hydrangea, and that'll start the arrangement.

And what I like to do, because I like a glittery table, is add a little silver.  I found these fabulous little, I call them "Liberace leaves," because they're glittery, and those will go in the arrangement as well.  So I see you're cutting the stems so they fit this vase. I just have to say I love this flower. It also comes in blue, by the way, and purple, and other colors.  It's a cheap flower, meaning when you use one, it takes up the room in a vase of three other kind of flowers.  So you spend less money and you get more bang for your buck. Right now I'm going to use this spider mum, and that takes up a nice amount of room in the vase.  The texture of it really plays off of the hydrangeas nicely. 

Kids Can Help Make a Hanukkah Floral Centerpiece

What's fun to do, again using white, is to decorate the vase too. So the kids can help with the flower arranging, they can help with the stickers, right?  Right. So I found these stickers at your local card store, and you pop them on the vase, and there you go you have a little bit of the holiday there.  So for more bling we can add the Liberace leaves. Your Liberace leaves! 

Tips for Making a Hanukkah Floral Centerpiece

I'm so afraid of floral design, you're making this simple, even for someone creatively challenged like me.  I feel like I could do it. Anyone could do this. The thing that's great about this arrangement, having hydrangea and spider mums, is that it's inexpensive.  You shop right at your local markets, and it's not expensive at all. And it looks like it is. A little glitter goes a long way. I always say that too.
