Hi, I'm Shane Murphy, your technology guru for About.com. Today, we'll peruse some of the best websites for purchasing ringtones.
Look for the Right Cheap Ringtone Sites
There are many different websites across the internet that offer free or very cheap ringtones. Unfortunately, they're scattered amongst deceptive websites that want to sell subscription services or just expose you to tons of ads, so it's important to separate the chaff from the wheat. As top ringtone webpages, all of these websites sell wallpapers, games, and other content designed for cell phones.
Cheap Ringtone Sites: Ringophone
The all-out ringtone enthusiast should look first at ringophone.com, where a $14.99 fee will get you a sixth month pass to download as many ringtones as you want from their wide selection. Ringophone allows you to share your download with as many different cell phones and numbers as you want, so you can hold onto your favorite ringtones if you change your phone, carrier, or phone number, even split your subscription with your friends.
Cheap Ringtone Sites: Freeringers
A close second is freeringers.net, where you can download as many high quality ringtones as you'd like for only $12 a year, sharable with up to 4 different phone numbers. Freeringers' only downside is that you can't browse their full catalogue before you sign up for the service, so you'll have to take the risk that they have what you're looking for.
Cheap Ringtone Sites: Ringtonejukebox
Ringtonejukebox.com is on the other end of the spectrum, offering a very large selection of high quality ringtones, polyphonic tones, and even clips from famous movies; all at prices that are a little above the norm at 2.99 a pop, sold individually and usable on as many phone as you please. This site complements its above average list of music with phenomenal compatibility by hosting multiple different file types and including a list of all of the different phones that work with their content.
Cheap Ringtone Sites: Coolfreeringtones
Coolfreeringtones.com offers exactly what it advertises: free ringtone downloads. Although it requires you to wade through a lot of ads and decoy links for pay sites on the way, this website still offers you thousands of ringtones to choose from for not a single dime. The quality of their selection is middling, and you could experience problems with compatibility since they typically only host one file type and make no guarantees on a phone by phone basis.
Cheap Ringtone Sites: Myxer
Myxer.com features a very robust selection of different songs to choose from at varying price points: some are free after you register, while the newest, premium content goes for $2.99. But what really makes Myxer stand out is their customization options. You can take almost any song you download and specify which section of the song you want to make a ringtone out of, as well as add fades and a loop. You can even upload your own audio files to make a custom ringtone.
Avoid Scam Sites
Ringtone websites are a favorite decoy for internet scammers and shady ad pushing. Beware sites like tkgnet.com and MatrixM.com that will promise free ringtones, only to hook you into an endless cycle of new websites, ads, and possible even dangerous downloads. If a website looks completely unreputable, it's probably best avoided.
