Transcript:Siamese Cat Breed

Hi. I'm Liz Jennings for About.com here to talk about the Siamese breed.

Siamese Cat Temperament

The Siamese are a very special breed. The woman who wrote the show standard, Jean Singer, used to say that they're unlike any other animal in the world. And I think what she was talking about is the Siamese are a very intuitive cat. They're very intelligent and they make wonderful pets.

They really love their owner. They follow you everywhere. They eat with you, they sleep with you. Um, the only thing is if you don't want to pay a lot of attention to them and you don't have a lot of time and you're not home very much you don't want to get a Siamese. Siamese do not do well without their people.

Types of Siamese Cats

But this is a very typical Siamese in the way that she looks. The Siamese come in four different colors. Talia is called a blue point Siamese. Because her body is basically white with a tiny bit of shading and her paws and her mask, and her ears and her tail, those are called her points, her point color. So, she's called a bluepoint Siamese.

The other 3 point colors are sealpoint, which is the most popular and that's when the points are all black and the other two point colors are lilac, which is very similar to Talia only the point color is a very pale frosty grey and then you have the chocolate points, which have a very white body and sort of a dark brown or dark chocolate points on them.

Siamese Cat Features

The Siamese have very blue eyes and they should have a very wedged shaped face like a triangle and then their ears should be large and flair out in the wedge. And typically they're very fine boned. You can see that Talia's very tiny. They should typically have a long tubular body, a very short, close lying coat, and a long whippy tail if we can find her here. And everything about them should be very long and very refined. They should have a straight profile. So, if you run a hand here, there should be no bump on her knows.

Living With a Siamese Cat

And mostly, the best thing about the Siamese is that they're just very loving. Some people think that the Siamese are mean. The Siamese are never ever born mean people just make them that way. They are just very sweet. They are talkative, however if you get one as a pet and you spay or neuter it they will answer you if you ask them a question.

They don't just incessantly meow all day long as one would do if it was in heat if you had a whole female or a whole male. So, as long as you get them, she's talking on cue here, as long as you get them spayed or neutered they usually don't talk all that much. But they will definitely talk if they want something or you ask them a question, or there's something that they need.

Siamese Cat Health Concerns

I've had Siamese for many years and I just think they're the most wonderful pets in the world. Health wise, you just want to try and find a very reliable breeder, as opposed to buying one at a pet shop.
