Transcript:How to Make a Fishing Cat ToyHi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com. Keeping your cat entertained can sometimes feel like a tall order – So today I'm going to show you how to make a fishing cat toy for your kitty to play with.
Fishing Cat Toy SuppliesFor this project you will need:
- a wire coat hanger
- a plastic wire tie
- a measuring tape
- a pair of needle nose pliers
- a pair of scissors
- a small roll of yarn
Make the Cat Fishing Toy PoleTo get started, use your needle nose pliers to untwist the wire on the coat hanger that is wrapped around the top of the wire coat hanger hook. Next, use the wire cutters on the pliers to cut the wire hanger just an inch or two after the first sharp bend in the wire so that all you have left is a long piece of wire with a smaller curved hook on one end and a larger hook at the other end of it.
Assemble the Fishing Cat ToyNext, using your measuring tape, measure and cut two feet of yarn. Next, tie and knot the yarn around the wire at the end located closer to the smaller hook at the far end of the coat hanger wire.
To create the loop at the end of your fishing cat toy yarn, holding the last 8 inches of the yarn with one end in each hand, cross and loop the bottom half of the yarn over the top of the main piece of yarn so that the end now looks like a lower case letter b.
Then fold the tail end of the yarn back on itself and push the folded section of the yarn just a third of the way back through the backside of the hole opening in the lower cased b shape. Making sure not to let the end of the yarn fall into the loop of the lower case b opening, hold the folded end of section going through the hole with one hand as you pull the main and longer end of the yarn up with the other hand to tighten the knot.
Above the knot just created, wrap the tail end of the yarn around the longer piece of yarn and tie one more standard knot. Finally, slide the plastic wire tie end through the loop at the bottom of the yarn and finish the plastic wire tie loop by pushing the plastic tip of the wire tie through the fastener on the other end of the wire tie.
Homemade Cat Toy SafetyWhen creating yarn and plastic wire tie loops at the end of the fishing rod, be sure to create the loops significantly smaller than your animals head to avoid accidental injuries to your pet while playing.
Test Out the Fishing Cat ToyNow it is time to test out your new fishing cat toy to get kitty's approval. Holding the toy by the larger hook – hold the rod of the Fishing Cat Toy just a few feet off the ground to get your cats attention, shake the toy around a bit to get kitty excited about the toy and play until tired!
Finally, always store any unused toys in a sanitary and safe location.
