Hi, I'm Debbie Anderson for

Getting a new kitten or cat for your home can be a rewarding companionship experience; however, there are a few supplies you need to have handy before bringing your new pet home. So today, I'm going show you the supplies you need to have for your new cat or kitten.

Food for New Kittens or Cats

First, always make sure you have the right type of food for your pet. Whether you feed your cat canned food or dry food, most kittens and cats will need a "Complete and Balanced Nutrition" type of cat food, and most premium cat and kittens foods that say "for all life stages" on the label are generally acceptable for your new pet.

New Kitten Supplies for Food and Water

Next, designate food and water bowls for your pet that are made of either non-lead glazed ceramic or stainless steel so that your new kitty or cat knows which bowls are okay for them to eat and drink from. As an added tip, remember to wash these dishes and add fresh food and water on a daily basis to prevent unwanted bacteria from forming in kitty's food and water bowls.

Choosing a Litter Box

Next, if your pet is going to be indoors at any time around the home, purchase an appropriately sized kitty litter box for your pet.

It's important to note here that when your new feline friend is young, you may need a smaller kitty litter box with a lower opening to the ground so that the kitten can more easily climb in and out of the kitty litter box. However, as your kitten grows older, you will need a larger kitty litter box with a taller opening for your cat in order to hold the larger clumps of waste an adult cat can produce.

Next, use a mat under the kitty litter box to catch any stray cat litter that spills on the floor during use.

Then, make sure you have a kitty litter scooper to clean out the cat box on a regular basis and use a plant-based or biodegradable kitty litter in the kitty litter box to avoid using kitty litters that may contain ingredients that could be harmful to your cat.

Tips for Buying New Kitten Supplies

Next, provide safe cat toys for kitty to play with and also invest in a scratching post or scratching pad so that kitty has a place to scratch their claws without getting into trouble for playing and scratching at your nice items and furniture around the home.

As an added tip, although your cat may enjoy curling up on the furniture, you might also want to consider getting your cat or kitten a bed so they have a safe place they know is their own to curl up in. The cat bed should be large enough for an adult sized cat to curl up in easily.

Finally, get an appropriately sized cat carrier for your cat so you can safely transport your cat to and from the veterinarian.

With these few basic supplies, you and your new feline friend can enjoy each other's company for many years to come.
