Transcript:How to Make a Dixie Cup Votive Candle
Hi, I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com, and this video is all about how to make dixie cup votive candles using instructions from About.com's Candle and Soap Making site.
Votive Candle Materials
You'll need:
- 3 oz. dixie cups
- Wax
- Pot or crock pot
- Color chips
- Fragrance
- Wicks
- Scissors
- Stirring stick
- Straws
- Twisty ties
- Glue gun
- High heat hot glue
Get Your Votive Candles Started
Thread the wick through a straw. Dab the bottom with hot glue and place the wick in the center of the cup. Then, release the wick. Use a straw, or pair of straws, to hold the wick in place at the top. You can secure the straws with a small wire or twisty tie. Prep your workspace by laying down plastic, and using a tray. The thrift store is a great place to pick up inexpensive pots that can be dedicated to candle making. Once you put the wax in, you're not going to want to use them for anything else.
Melt Wax for Votive Candles
Using a double boiler or crock-pot, slowly melt the wax. Start with the lowest temperature and be patient. Keep an eye on the wax as it heats, making sure that it doesn't start smoking. If it does, remove it from the heat immediately. Once it's fully melted, add color chips, and fragrance. Next, simply pour it into each cup, and let it set. If the wax settled in the center and is higher on the side, you can top it off, or use a heat gun to level it. When it's solid, and ready to be released, cut the paper and peel it off. Then just trim the wick if necessary. Allow the candles to continue to cure for at least 24 hours.
