Hi I'm Sean Fee for About.com and today I'm going to be showing you some tips on buying a digital SLR camera.

Digital SLR cameras range in price from around $500 to $5000 and up. Essentially what you paying the extra money for with the higher end cameras is the image quality. Digital images are captured on an photosensitive electronic sensor also know as a CCD or CMOS.

Generally speaking, bigger sensors have more mega pixels and therefor take higher resolution pictures. 2.5 or 3 inch LCD displays are what to expect from most DSLR's, however some models offer a extra high resolution screen for an ultra clear picture. This of course adds a premium to the price.

Battery Power for Digital SLR Cameras

Digital SLR's use a lot of power so be sure to invest in two if not three batteries, one to shoot one to charge and one fully charged spare. Larger more expensive DSLR's have an optional vertical grip with a second shutter release, some of these incorporate a second or extra large battery for longer shooting time.

You can save some money by holding off buying that camera on its initial release and waiting until some of the package deals come out.

DSLR Lenses and Flashes Cost Extra

The main item you'll save money on here is the lens. The lens can sometimes cost more than the camera body itself. Having a good lens is another crucial factor in image quality. Better lenses can be identified by the speed and accuracy of the auto focus, the quality of the optical glass and the aperture capabilities.

Look for lenses with image stabilization systems these help reduce the blur caused by camera shake allowing sharp pictures to be taken in low light or at long focal lengths.

Built in flashes are handy and most pro-sumer models come with one, however the professional models only come with a hot shoe for an external flash.

Resources for Buying Digital SLR Cameras

There are a number of good review sites online, one of my favorites is the Digital Camera Resource Page, they offer really thorough insight and some handy comparisons. Visit them at www.dcresource.com. Thanks for watching, to learn more visit us on the web at About.com.
