Hello I'm Kacie Marie and this is About.com and today I'm going to show you some tips on how to use a pocket camera. The majority of pocket cameras are easy to use and operate the same way. One of the first things you need to know is where the record button is. Generally it's right below the main screen, the big red button.
Know the Camera's Memory Capacity
Most pocket cameras use a memory stick. In most cases, it's going to be a SD card. Even if your camera has built-in memory, I highly suggest using a SD card. It has a higher memory capacity and you can film for much longer.
Most cameras can be filmed in high definition from 1080 to 720 p. I recommend using the 720 p because the quality is not that different from the 1080 and you have more space left over when you're done. You can also shoot still pictures with your camera. The quality and resolution is not the best, but for fun, family events and even facebook, it's good enough.
Stabilize the Camera
Most cameras come with an internal stabilizer. With that said, you still want to keep your arm nice and steady. Because if you don't, you're going to have a shaky video. If you're filming your family and friends, you want to make sure everyone is inside the frame. You do not want to cut off arms or heads. Now if you're filming yourself, you want to take a few times and practice and make sure you get yourself right in the center of the frame.
If you're filming inside, you want to make sure you're nearby some available light because in most cases, pocket cameras are not very light sensitive and you want people to see what you're filming.
Focus the Camera
You want to make sure you're nice and close to your subject matter because most pocket cameras do not have an output for microphones so get closer. All cameras have auto-focus and in some cases, the cameras have macro-focus. That's when you can get really close up. Don't forget if you're going to pull it back, change it back to auto-focus. That way everything can be in focus and you don't have to worry about it being blurry.
Transfer Camera Footage
There are two ways to transfer your videos to your computer. The first way is to take your SD card and plug it in to your SD reader. If you don't have an SD reader, then what I recommend even more is to use the USB from your pocket camera. Even if your computer recognizes your pocket camera, I highly recommend downloading the manufacturer's program because sometimes it comes with basic editing program, which helps you easily edit and organize your videos and photos.
If you don't have editing software and you plan on filming your family and friends you want to be sure to plan it out and help give them direction. It's easiest if you keep the clips to about one minute. And don't be afraid to do multiple takes. I'm planning my video so I can upload it in 3.... 2...1.
I hope my tips have helped. Now get out there and film the next YouTube hit. For more information, go to about.com. Until next time!
