Transcript:How to Make Elmo Cupcakes
Hi, I'm Sidney Galpern. I'm a certified sugar instructor. And today, for About.com, I'm going to show you how to make adorable Elmo cupcakes. These cupcakes are perfect for kids' birthday parties or as a craft for a young group.
Supplies Needed for Elmo Cupcakes
And so the tools that you're going to need for this project are a rolling pin, a knife or an X-Acto knife, an edible food marker, piping bag with a tip 233 to create the fur, and I'm using red icing since it's Elmo. And then I'm using just a little bit of vegetable shortening to keep the fondant from sticking to my hands. And then you'll need black, white and yellow fondant for the facial features. And then, of course, you're going to need your cupcake.
How to Use the Fondant for Elmo Cupcakes
Take a little piece of black fondant. One tip to get all the creases out of your fondant is, when you're rolling it into a ball, if you push really hard as you're rolling it, that will smooth out any imperfections. I'm going to use my fingers to kind fo shape the mouth for Elmo's face, and I'm just going to pinch it into a smile, and you want it fairly flat so the fur will stand up around it. I'm going to attach Elmo's mouth, first, with just a little bit of the icing, right down on the cupcake, so it will stick.
How to Pipe the Red Frosting
And now I'm going to pipe all of the fur around his mouth. I'm just squeezing the bag and picking it up, and as I'm picking it up, I'm slowly letting off of the pressure to create the fur effect.
And now I'm going to make his eyes, so I'll take a little bit of white fondant, and I'm going to roll it into a ball. Kind of hold it up to see how big you want your eyes to be. I want this one a little bit bigger. And then make another one for his other eye. Try and get them about the same size. To make the center of his eye, use the edible black food marker, or you can use a little piece of black fondant. So I'll go right in the center, or you can do it off to the side if you want him looking in a certain direction, and just twist it. And now I'll put these tilted a little bit at an angle on top of his head. So for the nose, I have a golden yellow dyed fondant, and I'm going to make kind of like a pear shape. Place it right below his eyes, kind of overlapping his mouth just a little bit.
Alternative Ways to Decorate Elmo Cupcakes
This is one way that you can make your Elmo cupcakes. If you don't have fondant, you can always use yellow, white and black icing and just pipe his features on. Thanks for watching. To learn more about cake decorating and baking, visit About.com.
