Hi I'm Kara Mickelson, Owner of CreativeCulinaryGroup.com. I'm a personal chef and food stylist. Today I'm here on behalf of About.com to show you how to decorate a heart cake for Valentine's Day using some traditional techniques in 5 easy steps.
Supplies for Decorating a Heart Cake for Valentine's Day
Here's what you will need to get started:
- Heart-shaped cake or mini cakes
- Cake filling and topping such as whipped chantilly cream, buttercream or ganache
- Buttercream frosting for the cake
- Pre-colored pastel pink fondant
- Heart-shaped cutters
- Rolling pin
- Cornstarch satchel or cornstarch in nylon
- Purchased or handmade fondant or gum paste formed into roses or hearts
- Apple corer or small circle cutter
Instructions for Decorating a Heart Cake for Valentine's Day
Step 1 - Fill the cake by removing a small amount of cake and piping in whipped chantilly cream, buttercream, or ganache.
Step 2 - Crumb coat your cakes with a thin layer of icing and chill to set. Then add your 2nd coat of frosting, which will be your presentation frosting.
Step 3 - Roll and cut the colored fondant into shapes. For this design, we are going to use traditional pink and we're going to form them into roses and hearts.

Step 4 - Dry decorative pieces at room temperature in a dry area till set. This will take about 5-12 hours.
Step 5 - Strategically place decorative items on cake, and carefully place on a decorated plate for service.
