Hi I'm Kara Mickelson, Owner of CreativeCulinaryGroup.com. I'm a personal chef and food stylist. Today I'm here with About.com to show you how to create leaves for cake decorations.
Supplies for Creating Leaves for Cake Decorations
Here is what you need to get started:
- Gum paste or fondant colored to a deep green color
- Leaf molds or leaf-shaped cutters
- Cornstarch satchel or cornstarch in nylon
- Assorted gum paste tools
- Foil or a curved support for drying
- Parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Decorator's glue
Instructions for Making Leaves for Cake Decorations
Roll out the gum paste or fondant to about 1/8" thick. Use a cutter or place the product in a mold, pressing in to create the texture from the mold. Press firmly and then peel away any excess product. Make assorted sizes and extra leaves in case any break.
Tips for Making Leaves for Cake Decorations
Use the gum paste tool or your paring knife to create the veins of a leaf. Place finished leaves on a piece of rolled up foil or on a curved dish or dowel while drying. Leaves need to dry for about 5 to 12 hours. Attach your leaves with decorator's glue if you're not using any wires. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed this cake-decorating segment.
