Transcript:Tips for Using Cake Mix as a Dessert Base

Hi, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, I'll share with you some tips for using a cake mix as a dessert base.

Basics for Using Cake Mix as a Dessert Base

Cake mixes make a wonderful shortcut for making cakes, of course. But you can also use also a cake mix as a shortcut for everything from cookies to cobblers, crisps, bars and even dessert pizzas? For example, these chocolate peanut butter cake mix cookies take less than 15 minutes of active prep time to make. That's because a cake mix already has all the dry ingredients - flour, sugar, baking powder - measured and ready to use.

Information About Using Cake Mix as a Dessert Base

It doesn't really matter what type or brand of cake mix you use, but pay attention to the type of cake mix specified in the recipe. For example, most cake mix desserts will use a basic 2-layer mix in a specific flavor, such as yellow, devil's food, spice, etc. Typically, you won't use specialty cake mixes, like an angel food cake mix, as a base for other desserts.

More Information About Cake Mix as a Dessert Base

If you want to doctor a cake mix to make it lighter, try substituting applesauce in equal measure for some or all of the oil. You can even turn a cake mix into a dense and fudgy torte by beating the cooked cake with a chocolate ganache and then freezing it briefly. Top it with more ganache and you've got a restaurant-worthy chocolate fudge cake.

Just about any dessert can be made faster and easier with a cake mix, but if you have allergies or special health conditions, such as diabetes or gluten intolerance, it's best to avoid using cake mixes unless you know you can handle all of the ingredients in them.

But if you're looking for a shortcut for even the most decadent classic dessert, like this tres leches cake, a cake mix is a great option. So the next time you want a quick and tasty dessert, start with a cake mix.
