Transcript:How to Make Applesauce Cake

Hi, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, we're making an applesauce cake from our Busy Cooks site.

Ingredients for Applesauce Cake

For this recipe, you will need:

  • 1 2-layer yellow cake mix
  • 3 large egg whites
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1-1/4 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp. flour

Instructions for Making Applesauce Cake

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13 or 2 9-inch round cake pans with cooking spray. Sprinkle a little flour in the bottom of the pan, and shake it over the pan. This will help the cake release easily.Now pour the cake mix into a mixing bowl. Add the egg whites, applesauce and water. This is replacing the eggs and oil you'd normally use to make a cake.Add the egg whites and the applesauce, and stir them in.

Additional Instructions for Applesauce Cake

Now add the flour, and use a electric stand mixer or hand mixer to beat the cake batter on medium until smooth. Stop to scrape down the sides as needed.Now pour the batter into the prepared pan, and smooth over the top with a spatula so it cooks evenly. Bake the cake according to the times listed on the package for the pan or pans you're using. The cake is done when a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.You can frost the cake as desired.
