Hi I’m Omar Saad here for About.com and today we’re going to take a look at a few different ways to collect airline miles.

Basics of Collecting Airline Miles

Some of us travel for business and others do it for pleasure. But regardless of the reason, it’s a popular and expensive practice. Fortunately if you know were to look, you can collect valuable airline miles and make your travels a bit more affordable.

Tips for Collecting Airline Miles

Perhaps the most common method of collecting airline miles is through the use of air miles credit cards. For a number of years now airlines have partnered with credit card companies to offer to credit cards that redeem a certain number of air miles per dollar spent. While on the surface may sound like an amazing win-win proposition, one should be aware that these cards often feature additional costs. We all know that everything comes with a price and with air miles credit cards that price is often in the form of a higher than normal annual fee and or a higher than normal interest rate.

Looking at the Options for How to Collect Airline Miles

Looking a few cards profiled on About.com's Budget Travel site, will further illustrate the point. Take a look, for example, at the British Airways Visa Signature card. Card members receive 50,000 miles upon sign up and for there will get two air miles with British Airways for every dollar spent on airline products and 1.25 miles for every dollar spent on everything else. While this is a great card for air miles, it also comes with a $75 dollar annual fee. The Jet Blue card from American express offers 10000 miles on your first purchase, but also features a variable interest rate that starts off at over 15%.

Other Ways to Collect Airline Miles

Apart from airline credit cards, you can usually acquire air miles through various shopping promotions. Companies like the GAP, Apple, and Amazon.com, to name a few, all offer air mile redemption programs from time to time. You can also almost always redeem air miles for a carrier by shopping for products on their website. Other carriers, such as US Airways, allow you to redeem air miles for in flight purchases such as snacks and drinks. With fuel prices constantly on the rise, finding and using a good air miles program can really help make travel more affordable. Just be sure to read the fine print to avoid pitfalls and ensure that the promotion is actually worthwhile. Thanks for watching, to learn more visit us on the web at About.com.
