Transcript: How to Configure Update Settings in Firefox
Hi. I'm Don Schechter for About.com. Today I'll show you how to configure update settings for Firefox in Windows and on a Mac.Why Update Firefox?
Updating your internet browser is important in order to keep you safe when surfing on the Web because of security updates to correct previous flaws. Keeping your browser updated is also helpful when it comes out with new features. Firefox has its own updater that you can configure to your liking.Update Firefox on Windows
If you're running windows, open up Firefox, and click on tools. Select options and a window will open. Click advanced at the top. Now click the update tab. Here you'll see that you can choose to automatically update Firefox when a new version comes out. If this box is checked the browser will determine if an update is available every time you open the browser. If the box is checked next to Installed Add-ons, Firefox will search for available updates to all add-ons you currently have installed. If you only want to download items from Firefox, then uncheck this box. Firefox itself will still automatically update but add-ons from third parties will not. If the box next to search engines is checked, Firefox will search for available updates to the search bar you have within the browser. I have Google at the top of mine.
Below these options are a few more. When updates to Firefox are found, think about what you want to do. If you choose ask me what i want to do, Firefox will prompt you every time there is an available update. The other option is to automatically download and install the update which is recommended for security purposes. By default the warning box will be checked if an update will delete any of your installed add-ons.
Finally, by clicking on the show update history, you will be able to view the updates of Firefox with detailed information. Close out of that window and I'll click ok to save my update changes.
Update Firefox on a Mac
If you're using Firefox on a Mac, the update settings are similar. Open Firefox and click on the Firefox menu on the toolbar. Choose preferences. Click Advanced, then the update tab. You will see all the options are the same as in Windows. Configure the update settings the way you want and enjoy the most up to date version of Firefox. Thanks for watching.
