Transcript:How to Make Bubble and Squeak
Today I'm going to show you how to make a really lovely British dish which is called Bubble and Squeak. Bubble and Squeak is actually the really charming name for left over vegetables. Usually you will have mashed potatoes in a Bubble and Squeak and then any other left over vegetables you might have. It's very easy to make.
Ingredients for Bubble and Squeak
For the Bubble and Squeak you will need:
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½ cup onion, finely chopped
- Leftover mashed potato
- Any leftover vegetables, finely chopped
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions for Making Bubble and Squeak
To start our Bubble and Squeak, the first thing we need to do is melt the butter into a large frying pan. And then into the melted butter I'm going to put the onion and I'm just going to cook this gently for about 3 minutes, or until the onions are soft. Once the onions are nice and soft I'm just going to raise the temperature slightly and then into the pan I'm going to add my left over vegetables, some swede, and the mashed potato, cabbage, carrots, and some leeks. These now are all going to be mixed together, then we're going to fry this now for about 10 minutes, and you'll probably want to stir it from time to time.
Cooking Bubble and Squeak
The Bubble and Squeak has had 10 minutes on a high heat, and you can see it's now picked up this lovely golden brown colour onto the vegetables which shows it's just about ready. All we need to do now is season this with a little salt and pepper and we give that a final stir and then we're there. How simple is that, a delicious Bubble and Squeak.
You can eat this as a side dish or I like it served for lunch with a fried egg on top, really delicious!
