Hi. I’m Krystyna Rittichier with About.com, and today I’ll show you the tools needed for baking bread.

While baking bread the only things you really need are the ingredients, measuring cups, bowls and an oven. However, there are many tools that make the process of baking bread easier.

Basic Tools for Baking Bread

One thing you should consider is mixing bowls. It is very hands to have several sizes of mixing bowls while you are working. It’s handy to have a small, medium, and large size bowl for baking. Measuring cups and measuring spoons are a necessity during baking, where precise measurements are important. It is also helpful to have a liquid measuring cup for liquids, and a larger measuring pitcher for larger quantities of ingredients. Wooden spoons are an important tool during baking. Metal spoons should not be used for bread making, and plastic breaks too easily. It’s good to have several clean kitchen towels. These are frequently used damp and dry to cover the dough when it is rising, or to cover finished loaves before serving. Paper towels are also handy to cover stickier doughs so they don’t get lint on them from a towel.

Bread Pans and Stones

Bread pans and baking sheets are used to cook the bread on in the oven. Bread pans create a loaf shape, and baking sheets can be used when forming more unique loaves. You can even place baking bread on a pizza stone for a crispier crust on your bread. Parchment paper is a great tool for bakers, as it makes cleanup easier, and prevents the dough from sticking.

Helpful Tools for Bread Bakers

A timer is an essential piece of equipment while making bread. Other pieces of equipment which are useful but not necessary in bread making are a flour sifter, a pastry brush, a rolling pin, a cooling rack, a water spray bottle, a super sharp knife or razor for scoring loaves, and a sourdough starter for sourdough breads.
