Transcript:Texas Hold 'Em Poker Strategy Ideas

Hi, I'm Dolina with About.com, and today we are going to talk about strategies for Texas Hold 'Em poker. The great thing about the following tips is that they can be used to help solidify your game, whether you are playing at home with your friends or out at a casino or poker hall.

Have a Good Poker Face for Texas Hold 'Em Poker

The first thing we are going to discuss is having a good poker face. A good poker face can carry you a long way when at the tables. Your opponents will constantly be watching your every move, trying to figure out your "tell" to gain an advantage over you during the game. Keep a straight face and never show emotion, whether you have complete "rags" or the absolute "nuts."

As others are watching your every move, so should you be watching theirs, and that's why our next strategy is simply, pay attention. Now you want to do this as discreetly as possible since most people will have their guard up if they feel they are being watched. A good pair of sunglasses can be of great use in a situation like this. This is me with my sunglasses on. It doesn't seem like I'm paying attention at all. But what you don't realize is that underneath those glasses I can discretely watch each player make their moves and search for "tells" and betting patterns.

Avoid Betting Patterns for Texas Hold 'Em Poker

Betting patterns are something you want to look for in other players while trying desperately not to fall into one yourself. After playing at a table for awhile you may catch on to a specific player only betting when he has a strong hand, or always making pot-sized bets when he is bluffing. These are known as betting patterns. This knowledge can be extremely useful because if you run into a player you know only bets with a strong hand, you can easily fold your own when he bets into you, being reasonably sure that he has you beat. To make sure you don't fall into your own betting pattern, always try to adjust your play.

Adjust Play for Texas Hold 'Em Poker

You always want to keep your opponents guessing when it comes to your play, so always try to mix things up a bit. If the last time you made a straight you bet out, maybe this time try trapping your opponent in the hope of winning more chips with a check raise. A check raise can be a handy tool in any poker players arsenal. To complete the move, all you need to do is check your turn, wait for your opponent to bet and then raise, usually around 2 or 3 times more. This is a very strong move and your opponent will usually perceive you as being quite strong. The check raise can also be used as a great bluffing tool, as it can show strength even if in actuality your hand is quite weak.

Bluffing Is a Good Texas Hold 'Em Poker Strategy Idea

To be a successful poker player you must know how to bluff. Bluffing is when you make a bet, pretending to have a strong hand, when in reality you have a weak one. A good bluff can do wonders for your game, but try not to do it too often or you may find yourself out of chips.
