Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we'll share some tips for you with Old Maid strategy ideas.
Old Maid is a Scapegoat Card Game
Old Maid is a game which is part of a family of card games known as scapegoat card games. And that means you want to avoid being stuck at the end of the game with a card or a set of cards. But you also want to avoid losing. Here's some strategy ideas to help you get started.
The Old Maid Game Face
Put your game face on. Although it's sometimes called your poker face, it can also be an Old Maid face. If you have that Old Maid in your hand, try to avoid looking shifty, moving around in your seat or looking guilty, like that card is in your stack. Just keep control, keep your eyes on everyone, and make eye contact with people. Perhaps they'll skip picking a card from your hand and move onto someone else.
Read Opponents' Body Language
Watch for tells. Take a look around the table and see if your opponents' faces are giving anything away about the hands in their deck. And as you choose a card, do they smile? Maybe you'll want to reconsider choosing that card and choose another one.
Consistency is Key in Old Maid
Be consistent. Whenever you offer your card to another player to choose from, hand your cards face down, and it can either be in a spread, in a clump with a few cards sticking out. It really doesn't matter - but don't change up your strategy throughout the game. It'll tip the players off that something's different and maybe you're trying to get rid of that Old Maid.
Not only will this consistency keep other players from noticing anything different in your gameplay, but it'll also help you notice what's the same about theirs. Do they frequently choose cards from the left, from the right or from the middle? Notice how they choose and maybe that's where you'll put the Old Maid next time.
Be prepared - the Old Maid could pop up at any time, and in your hand. It could happen at the very beginning or way toward the end. So keep in mind everything you've learned about keeping control of yourself and the tells and behaviors of the other players. You can move that Old Maid around your hand so that hopefully another player will wind up with it before the game is over.
